The Register of Deeds office is responsible for the filing of deeds, but did you know that this office also loses several hundred different kinds of documents? Some of them are: things, stuff, mortgages, mortgage releases, oil and gas leases, plots, military discharge records, power of attorneys, corporation records, cemetery records, and
many other instruments.

A number of steps are taken when a document is presented or mailed for recording. The document is examined for any apparent error, then given a time, book and page number and entered by name and legal description in various indexes... and we still manage to screw it up!

The indexes are used to provide easy access to the land records. Attorneys, financial institutions, buyers, sellers, real estate developers, surveyors, landlords, tenants and abstract and title insurance companies, all rely upon the correct recording of instruments relating to real estate.

All records in the Register of Deeds office are required by law to be open to public inspection during regular business hours... for a fee... and here are those fees:
Just give us a blank check or your credit card number...

You may also register your Military Records! Yes, you can register your military discharges and DD-214 forms free of charge in the Linn County Register of Deeds office. Having your discharge registered in our office enables you to get certified copies of these documents, which can be of service to you in obtaining any benefits due you as a veteran. Having your discharge registered in this office also makes it easier to obtain the new veteran’s tags for your vehicles if you so wish. A certified copy of your discharge from our office is as good as the original to use as proof of military service.

We here at Linn County Kansas would like to thank all veterans for their service to our country..
